Lukwago’s Late Heroics Earn SC Villa a Point Against Vipers SC

SC Villa extended their unbeaten home run after a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Vipers SC in a tense and competitive encounter.

First Half

The game kicked off cautiously, with both sides struggling to settle. Possession was frequently lost in the opening exchanges, and neither team managed to establish early dominance.

By the 20-minute mark, tensions had begun to rise as Villa searched for a breakthrough but failed to find a cutting edge. Around the half-hour mark, the Jogoos grew into the game, taking control of possession and pushing forward with intent.

Despite their attacking pressure, clear chances remained limited. Patrick Kakande had a notable opportunity in the 41st minute, but his effort went wide. The first half ended goalless after two minutes of added time.

Second Half

Villa were forced into an early change after the break, with Kakande going off injured and Reagan Mpande coming on in the 53rd minute.

The hosts looked more organized and dangerous in this half, applying consistent pressure. In the 60th minute, Kiggundu made a vital save to deny Najib Yiga, while Frank Ssebuufu fired the rebound wide.

Against the run of Villa’s momentum, Vipers took the lead in the 65th minute through Hillary Mukundane.

Villa Fightback

Villa responded almost immediately with a moment of quality. A flowing move involving Hassan Mubiru and Najib Yiga resulted in a pinpoint cross, which Frank Ssebuufu met with a powerful header to level the score at 1–1.

Closing Stages

The Jogoos continued to press for a winner, showing determination and attacking intent. The game became more physical late on, with Simon Semayange receiving a yellow card in the 85th minute.

Late substitutions, including Geoffrey Gaganga, Ibrahim Kasinde, and Andrew Otim, added fresh energy, but neither side could find a decisive goal.

Man of the Match

David Lukwago delivered a standout performance between the posts, highlighted by a crucial last-minute save to deny Vipers’ Kariisa and preserve the draw for Villa.

Full Time

The match finished 1–1, with SC Villa maintaining their unbeaten home record. A spirited display from the Jogoos, capped by a heroic goalkeeping performance to secure a valuable point.

JOGOOS SEEK DERBY WIN AT HOME

SC Villa will host their archrivals Express FC in the return leg of the Uganda Premier League, renewing one of the fiercest rivalries in Ugandan football — the famous Kampala Derby.

The Jogoos currently sit fourth on the league table and will be determined to secure maximum points in front of their supporters as they continue their push for a stronger finish this season. The derby has always carried more than just three points, with pride, history, and bragging rights in Kampala at stake whenever the two giants clash.

The rivalry between Villa and Express dates back several decades and has produced some of the most memorable moments in Ugandan football. Both clubs are among the most decorated in the country, with Villa dominating the late 1980s and early 2000s while Express enjoyed historic success in earlier years. Their encounters have consistently drawn massive crowds and intense atmospheres, making the Kampala Derby one of the most anticipated fixtures in the domestic calendar.

Frank Sebuufu scored in the first leg

In recent meetings, however, Villa have held the upper hand. In the last ten encounters, the Jogoos have registered seven victories, while Express have managed just two wins, with the remaining match ending in a draw.

Charles Lwanga Returned to training this week

Ahead of the clash, Villa could be boosted by the possible return of Charles Lwanga and Najib Yiga. Aside from those potential additions, the Jogoos are expected to maintain the same squad that has featured in recent matches.

Head coach Kovacevic Zeljko emphasized the importance of the encounter, highlighting the magnitude of the derby and the motivation it brings to the team.

Head Coach Zeljko Kovacevic

It’s a derby and one of the biggest matches in Ugandan football. Games like these naturally motivate the players, and they always give their all to make sure we get a positive result. Playing at home adds even more responsibility, so the boys must push harder to secure maximum points.

Winger Hassan Mubiru also shared his thoughts ahead of the derby, stressing the significance of the clash and calling on supporters to rally behind the team.

Hassan Mubiru celebrating at Kadiba recently

It’s a derby and both teams have a rich history in Ugandan football. We have prepared well and the players are ready to give everything on the pitch. I call upon our fans to come in large numbers and support us as we fight for the three points.

SC VILLA TARGET MAXIMUM POINTS AT HOME

SC Villa return to action as they host Maroons FC in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League, with the Jogoos determined to secure maximum points on home soil. As they continue their push near the top of the table, Villa will be eager to turn recent draws into a vital victory and maintain pressure on the teams above them.

Villa currently sit on 31 points from 16 matches, while Maroons occupy mid-table with around 18 points. The Jogoos have been formidable at home this season, winning the majority of their matches in front of their fans. In contrast, Maroons have found life difficult on the road, losing four of their last six away league fixtures.

Historically, the contest has been closely fought. In the last 15 meetings, SC Villa have claimed six wins compared to Maroons’ two, with seven matches ending level. However, the most recent encounter saw Maroons edge Villa 1–0 in December 2025, adding extra motivation for the hosts heading into this clash.

Isaac Mpagi  back to fitness

Team news sees Villa miss the services of left back Simon Semayange due to injury, while Isaac Mpagi has returned to full fitness and is available for selection. The rest of the squad is fit and ready for the challenge.

Aslam Semakula during team training.

Midfielder Aslam Semakula acknowledged the importance of the fixture, saying:

We’ve drawn our previous two games and the pressure is high, so we just have to get all the points and get into a much better position on the log.”

Assistant head coach Peter Onen emphasized the need to sharpen up in attack, noting

We’ve not been scoring, so it’s been our focus during training. We need to score more and win our games. We understand Maroons FC is not an easy team, but the points are all that we need.”

Kick-off is set for 8pm at FUFA Stadium Kadiba, where Villa will look to make home advantage count.

Isaac Mpagi Returns to First Team Training

The Club is delighted to confirm that Isaac Mpagi has officially returned to first team training as he continues his journey back to full fitness.

The midfielder has been sidelined since March last year after suffering a muscle tear that required surgery. Following a successful operation, Mpagi has spent the past four months undergoing an intensive rehabilitation program under the supervision of the Club’s medical department.

His return to the training pitch marks an important milestone in what has been a long and demanding recovery process.
By the time of the unfortunate injury, Mpagi had already made seventeen appearances for the Club featuring in three CECAFA matches, two CAF Champions League preliminary fixtures, and twelve league games. His presence had become increasingly important within the squad before being forced out of action.

Speaking after rejoining the group, Mpagi expressed his determination and commitment.

I have been keenly observing how every member of the team is giving their all for the badge, and I promise to do the same.

The midfielder now faces the challenge of gradually reintegrating into competitive action and competing for a place in the matchday squad. After such a lengthy absence, the focus remains on regaining full match fitness while blending seamlessly back into the team setup.

Mpagi’s return comes at a crucial time for the Club following the departure of Atukunda Tonny earlier this year.
Head Coach Zeljko Kovacevic welcomed the positive development:

We need everything every player can give in order to achieve this season’s club goals.

While there is still work to be done before Mpagi returns to competitive action, his steady progress is an encouraging sign for the technical bench and supporters alike. The Club will continue to manage his workload carefully as he builds towards full match readiness ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Every game in the second round is a hard game because teams want to collect maximum points in the next four months. We’ve prepared well ahead of this match. I urge all the fans to come in big numbers because with them comes the energy for us as a team.

Left back Simon Semayange added:

I believe the coaches have given us the tactics, so it’s work on the pitch now and we get the points on the road. Express FC responded by tightening their play and balancing possession as they attempted to deny Villa space. Ibrahim Kasinde came close in the 28th minute but his effort went wide. At the half-hour mark, SC Villa remained in control, protecting their slim advantage.

Express threatened to equalize late in the first half, but a brilliant save by David Lukwago in the 39th minute denied them a way back into the match. Another attempt by Mubiru Hasan was safely handled by the red eagles’ goalkeeper. After three minutes of added time, SC Villa went into the break with a 1–0 lead.

Despite five minutes of added time, Express failed to find an equalizer, and SC Villa held firm to claim all three points in the derby.
